I purchased a 2024 S3 about 6 months ago, and only last night I received a notice on the dashboard that the key fob battery was running low. I am going to change it tonight, but I was wondering whether this is common after 6 months, or if I have a defective battery. In other autos, they usually survive a lot longer.
Probably the second key. Try the other one.
Today’s key batteries have a short lifespan, according to an Audi expert. Some years ago, its sole function was to serve as a remote control for locking and unlocking. Today, a lot is going on between the automobile and your keys. Nearly everything is kept on the key, and it refreshes the current data every few minutes (miles, oil level, gasoline level, active check lights, 12V voltage, etc.). So six months isn’t unusual. I always tell my customers that it should last 6–12 months. But the used battery heavily influenced this. Cheap Chinese rubbish can barely last about 2-3 months.
Expert tip:
When replacing the key battery, press a button after removing the old one and before installing the new one to avoid premature re-prompting. Additionally, the message may indicate that the second key also needs a new battery if it had recent contact with the car. In that case, the message will only disappear after changing the second key’s battery and allowing it to communicate with the car again.
Thank you this is helpful!!
