My questions. The A4 is now known as the A5. Is this implying that the A5 will be available in sedan and Sportback variants, or is the new A4 (now A5) just available in Sportback? The design is an incremental change, as is customary with Audi, which is fine. I’m not a fan of all the screens, though…
Even numbers will be electric, and odd numbers ICE.
I’m feeling conflicted about this name change; it seems a bit illogical at first.
Is the A4 supposed to be lower than the A5? Or is the A5 below the A6? Traditionally, these numbers have indicated the vehicle class, with the A1 being Audi’s entry-level model and the A8 at the top.
Also, the numbering system doesn’t inherently suggest whether a vehicle is electric. By that logic, if the A8 becomes electric, will an A9 be needed to replace it?
Furthermore, with the EU planning to ban the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035, will this create gaps in the lineup?
Still, I can see some reasoning behind this move. It seems Audi wants to maintain two separate ranges: one for combustion and hybrid vehicles and one for electric models. They might also prefer not to disrupt the established A? naming pattern (for example, using Audi E5, S E5, RS E5). Naming it A5e or A5 e-tron could suggest it’s just an electric version of the A5, which isn’t the case.
I hope they keep using “e-tron” in the model names until 2035, like Audi A4 e-tron, Audi A5, Audi A6 e-tron, and so on.
I believe the initial release will only include the Saloon and Avant. The Coupe and Sportback models may debut next year.
To be honest, I like it except for the front grill; nevertheless, I never liked the A5 B9 front end either. I’m looking forward to seeing how the other new models appear.
