Sudden drop of oil level... any ideas?

2 days ago my oil level dropped from full to almost empty, so about 1/2 liter, within 2 hours. Close to my destination, the emission control light turned on. That’s when I noticed the low oil level. There was no additional warning message on the dash, and I didn’t notice any loss of power. The engine sound was the same as usual, which sounds a bit rough. My car is an Audi A5, 2.0 Tfsi from 2015 with ~150,000 km. The oil level is usually pretty stable, so it’s not the old TFSI problem of guzzling oil. There’s no noticeable oil in the engine bay or below the car. I don’t have a dipstick, so I can’t check the level manually. Anyone got an idea what the issue is? I will post additional information if requested. EDIT: Got an appointment to read the failure codes in 2 days. I don’t want to just drop the car off at the mechanics near me since I have a bad experience with them.

Have you checked if there was a low oil level warning on the dash? Usually, it comes on when you need to add about 1L of oil.

No warning came on, just the emission control light. I’ll check the MMI oil level again.

If the MMI shows oil level between MIN and MAX, that should be fine. I’d recommend adding oil as needed. If the low oil light comes back after ~1000km, maybe get a consumption measurement done.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll keep an eye on it and add oil if it’s low.

You mentioned no noticeable oil leaks. Have you checked under the car after driving? Sometimes it can be subtle.

Yeah, I checked but couldn’t find anything. It’s strange.

Definitely get a compression test and leakdown test if the oil keeps disappearing. It might reveal more about the issue.

I’ll do that if the problem persists. Just want to figure it out before I take it to a mechanic.

Good luck with your appointment to read the failure codes. Hopefully, that gives you some answers.

Thanks! I really hope it helps narrow down what’s going on.
