I’m considering buying a 2010 Audi A4. My dad has an '08 A3, which had a couple of problems but they were easy fixes. Is there any reason to avoid the A4, or is it a safe buy? Thanks!
There are some big issues to consider: timing chains, water pumps, and PCV valves can be problematic. There’s also super high oil consumption due to improperly sized piston rings, which could lead to a full engine rebuild. These fixes can be really expensive if they haven’t been addressed already.
RUN! Seriously, think twice about it.
If you’re handy with maintenance, you might be fine. But be prepared for some work.
I’d recommend spending a bit more for a 2013-2016 (B8.5). A lot of the issues with the previous 2.0 turbo got revised in those years. Plus, it’s usually best to go with the final year of a model generation.
For sure, go for 2014 or later. They’re much better in terms of reliability.
Definitely look at a '14 or newer. You’ll be glad you did.
